What’s happening with the old Scout hut?

The old Scout hut on the high street has certainly seen better days. And it’s been many days (and then some) since anyone attended a Scouting event there.

With rents on the Millennium Hall rising to untenable levels, the group is looking for alternative venues in which to meet. Sadly, with the healthy sizes of the Cub and Scout sections it’s not practical to meet in the old hut, even if were still watertight and usable.

A planning application was put in around 2015 to replace the hut with a multi-purpose hall, but the cost of this (which involved excavations down to ground level) were more than the group could afford, even with fundraising and grant applications.

In the past few weeks, we’ve been able to secure use of Lydiard Millicent Village Hall at a workable rate but we still need somewhere to store all of our camping equipment and other kit.

We are therefore now looking to replace the existing hut with a new storage facility for group equipment. As well as having plenty of storage for kit and space to dry wet tents, we’re considering creating a meeting room and kitchenette for leader and Committee meetings.

The village can rest assured that the current eye-sore will soon be gone! And in its place will be a new building which will help take Scouting in Purton and Lydiard Millicent forward.
