Burbage July 09 (Jul 2009)
Despite rainy weather we were still able to have a great Summer camp week end at Burbage Scout HQ. After arriving and pitching the tents, we celebrated Toms Birthday and had a night hike around the village. There was a great rope swing, ditches to jump and trees to climb on site which kept us busy whenever we had free time! After a late snack of soup provided by Sher Khan (our cook for the week end), we all settled late for the night.
In the morning, after flag break, all the Cubs made their own sandwiches for the day hike. We set off with James and Tom leading the hike with Nick and Ryan at the rear, monitoring the rest of the Pack and hike with Akela. The 4 older Cubs did a great job of navigating during the day - we helped the narrow boats with opening and closing lock gates, (and were kept well away from the waters edge!) and enjoyed a tour around the Crofton Pumping Station (which was still hot from the previous week when it was in action). After lunch overlooking the canal and railway, we proceeded to hike to Wilton Windmill. We climbed 4 floors inside the windmill, up the very narrow wooden ladders. it was very cramped inside, and is haunted by 2 ghosts!
It rained on the hike home and we got very wet and muddy. Supper was late and it rained so hard, we had to have an indoor camp fire! It was still good fun, after which we had hot chocolate and marshmallows. After another very wet and beetle infested night (!), we had a Victorian morning, learning new games and each Six made a 'pioneered catapult' White Six fired their missile the furtherest - 21 feet!
Finally after Scouts Own, led by 6 of the Cubs and Bagheera, we enjoyed some traditional Victorian fairground attractions and games. So even thought it rained - we still had a great week end.
